Animal Experimentation

Ok, so when is something so wrong its right? Or when is something that is considered wrong by so many, the right thing to do? I'm talking about Animal Experimentation. There are large amounts of people out there in the world that widely dispise animal experimentation for medical research and claim it is crulity to animals. I'm not saying it is necessarily the right thing to do, but I believe it is the better thing to do. The only other option that has been presented to this point has been clinical research, and in my opinion, animals which are bred for experimentation are more exendable than human lives. The way I see it, the majority of healthy people in this world would never put them into an experimental position that could end up costing them their lives. Now of course animals can not pick whether or not they are experimented on, however, researchers are beginning to breed certain animals just for expermintation, and I see it as a lesser of the two evils. People will disagree with me, and go ahead, disagree, however, just keep in mind, would you rather be in the place of the rat?

I think everyone would agree that they would not want to be in the place of the rat, however just because these beings cannot express how they feel in these labs or rally against their captivity is no reason to continue this practice. The reading heavily suggested that this type of research severely retarded some scientific progress, so if it is not a complete aid in the medical field get rid of it.

This is also a point about our intelligence. Just because we are more intelligent and are able to capture or manufacture these animals does not mean we get to harm them because we can feel what it is like to be in their position. So, with our empathy towards these animals and intellectual ability we should be able to come up with another means of testing medicines, but until then it does not make animal testing ethical.

As well, the article on vivisection made a good point that perhaps animal research, regardless of your morals on the situation, might not produce good results at all, and may be impeding the road to cures instead of encouraging it.

I totally agree that if we can come up with another means of testing where we are not using animals or humans than that is the route we should be going. But until that day comes, I believe we have to persist in what we are doing. I am in no way supporting cruilty to animals, that is not the point I am trying to make, I'm just saying if this is our only option right now, then we need to keep going with it until we find something else. Also, there is data out there that will say the complete opposite to the research saying that animal experimentation will retard the scientific process. It all depends on what group published the information and where it is coming from.

You write:

"Also, there is data out there that will say the complete opposite to the research saying that animal experimentation will retard the scientific process. It all depends on what group published the information and where it is coming from."

I would suggest that the crucial issue is not the source of the information or its mere existence, but its reliability or truth.
